It exploited the mining of gold and platinum, with slaves imported from Africa by Portuguese and Dutch traders, while the Indians were assigned to sedentary agriculture.

The current city was founded by settlers prospectors into the second half of the nineteenth century, belonged to the municipality of Bajo Baudo, with head in Pizarro, who was separated from the January 1, 1959, pursuant to an ordinance of November 25 1958.
