While the Araucan�a region is the poorest in Chile, Temuco concentrates most of the wealth of the region so paradoxically stands as a city rich level of Antofagasta , Punta Arenas and Santiago , this detached of consumption figures in supermarkets and in shopping centers. Being located in the metropolitan area factories internationally recognized as Rosenand Surlat among others, especially related to the furniture industry. Temuco also has the shopping center (mall)'s largest southern Chile located in the district of Avenida Germany and built by a typical representative of the community as Temuco German businessman Horst Paulman (one of the largest retailers in Latin America number one in Argentina with Jumbo) who began amassing his fortune a few blocks from where his Portal Temuco located today, in what was Las Brisas, initial supermarket in the region, the source of the business empire Cencosud .

According to the Ministry of Finance , during the years 1986-1995, participation in agriculture declined consistently in the regional economy, acquiring a new dynamic industry, construction, trade and social and community services. The 7% of the population is considered indigent Temuco (16,571 people) and 12.4% are non-indigent poor (less than the national average and far below the average for Latin America), giving a total of 46,035 people in poverty.

Commerce

Temuco has a closely related trade services, tourism and conventions are also important manufacturing industries and wood products trade and the sale of products with nearby communities. It also emphasizes the presence of typical Mapuche culture, having as one of the most requested on or merk�n merqu�n (smoked dry chili and ground). The woodwork (like rogues Indians ), musical instruments, clothing and Mapuche silver , are also highly sought after by tourists visiting the city.
