The culture of Puerto Octay is closely related to the German colonization of the second half of the nineteenth century, which is reflected in its cuisine, architecture, customs and festivals.

Architectural Heritage

Puerto Octay currently presents a rich and varied architecture, mainly made of wood, which is the historical reflection of the colonization process, driven by the State of Chile in the mid-nineteenth century, with families coming from Germany . This architecture is characterized as a mixture between European building tradition of the nineteenth century and the local technical, mainly chilotes master builders.

So as the house constructions arise Niklitschek (current Municipal Library), the Hotel Haase, Wulf's house (now Colegio San Vicente de Paul), the house and the house A�azco Werner. Although it has been more than 100 years, it is still possible to see this type of buildings.

As a way to highlight and protect the architectural heritage, was developed during the second half of 2009 and early 2010 in Puerto Octay a process of declaration of Typical Zone , where they identified the community together with a representative area of the identity and history. On Wednesday July 14th of 2010 , was introduced Typical Zone Puerto Octay, by the National Monuments Council.

Festivals

*  Festival "The Golden Salmon". : Principal musical art event of the commune. Develops during the 5th and 6th of February in Municipal Stadium dependencies Puerto Octay.

Cultural Infrastructure

Municipal Public Library No. 198 is the primary documentation center of the commune. It was created in August 1984 and since its inception has been its actions aimed at promoting books and reading as a permanent source of information, knowledge, recreation and culture
