Pisagua is a town in Chile , located in the northern coastal area of the country. The village, which has a population of 260 inhabitants according to the 2002 census, one belongs administratively to the borough of Huara , in the new Province Tamarugal , ITarapac� Region .

Pisagua is geographically located at 19 � 35'S, 70 � 13'W, in the desert area, while inter tropical of Chile. It is located 1980 km north of the capital, Santiago , equidistant from Arica (located 229 km. north) 2 as Iquique (161 km. south), three major Chilean cities of the north of the country.

There is a large bay-formerly Huaina Pisagua 4 - which opens to the northwest, on the Pacific Ocean , which fall directly to the high and steep hills of the Coast Range north, on which are the plains of the desert Atacama , like the Pampa aquifers.

In 1890, Francisco Risopatr�n noted, for Pisagua Bay, that " measures about six square miles of capacity and offers shelter from the first, second and third quadrants. Their holding ground is good, but the strong gusts of hills, in the summer, forcing ships to anchor at two anchors, bow south. Outside the bay, the winds always weak. The bay is deep, rock-bottom in much. The best anchorage is SE. in 40-45 feet of water. ".

The bay is bounded by two headlands, Punta Pisagua, north and Punta Pichalo, larger south. Further north of Punta Pisagua, is the mouth of the gorge of Tana or Camina , with a long beach, called Caleta Pisagua or Pisagua Vieja , because originally there had settled population.

The coastal area is steep and full of rocks, leaving room only to small creeks and some beaches.

Jun�n Caleta , Caleta Mejillones del Norte and Caleta Buena is located south of Punta Pichalo and, despite being currently uninhabited, had relative importance during the nitrate boom and fishing. Within Pisagua Bay, there are small beaches along the inhabited area and under the cemetery
