About Ilha de Santo Antao

JuteVilla
second largest in the archipelago area and third in population, with approximately 40 km long longitudinal and about 20 km wide. Of volcanic origin, the island Santo Antao is further north and west of Cape Verde and farther away from the African continent, so its far west is considered the westernmost point of Africa. The Canal Saint Vincent separates it from the nearest island, the island of São Vicente .

Uninhabited when discovered in 1462 by Portugal , began to be colonized with little success in 1548. A chain of mountains, long regarded as unbridgeable divides the island between north and south.

The main settlements are the village of RibeiraGrande , Porto Novo - gateway for people and goods from St. Vincent - and Ponta do Sol - where the aerodrome is located on the island currently disabled
