The city hosted in 2010, an important international event, the Twelfth United Nations Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice.

The city is one of the host cities of the 2014 FIFA World Cup. Additionally, Salvador hosted the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup.
