It was founded on 12 October 1851. On 29 September 1915 it was declared a "Pueblo" (village) by the Act of Ley N� 5.336, and on 15 May 1925, its status was elevated to "Villa" (town) by the Act of Ley N� 7.837. On 18 June 1973 its status was further elevated to "Ciudad" (city) by the Act of Ley N� 14.138
