Industry

Major area employers are Rutland Regional Medical Center, General Electric (GE), OMYA Central Vermont Public Service and Carris Reels. GE employed 975 workers in 2010. Casella Waste Systems is the second largest private employer (behind GE Aircraft), employing 583 employees at their headquarters on Green Hill Lane.

Recently, a 1-acre (4,000 m) area of land downtown, known as "the pit", is slated for development. The new office building is planned to hold offices, education and civic space.
