The island has a Mediterranean climate. Average temperature is 14°C and average annual precipitation is 529mm. There are a number of small streams running from north to south at the southwestern part of the island. Freshwater sources though are not enough for the island so water is piped in from the mainland.
The island has strong northern winds which makes it one of the most suitable places for wind energy in the Aegean region of Turkey, and, with recent wind turbines, it exports electricity to the mainland
