Iboshim, the city of Bes, was founded by the Phoenicians in the year 654. C. (according to classical texts). The village consisted of an acropolis and a port area on the shore of the bay. He also had temples and areas with significant artisanal potteries. It also has one of the largest necropolises of time Punic about 3,000 hypogea excavated in the rock on a hill near the town called Puig des Molins. It is estimated that in the V century. C. the city had between 4,000 and 5,000. Later he was an ally of the Carthaginians, becoming a commercial center of great vitality that exported manufactured goods to different parts of the Mediterranean.

After the destruction of Carthage in the year 146. C., the city maintained its commercial and political autonomy and continued, even more intensely, commercial and industrial activity as federated city of Rome, the federation is not known the start year. This phase ended when Vespasian’s became Roman municipality in the year 70, with the name of Flavius Municipius Ebusitanum and commonly known as Ebusus.

Then began a period of decline that lasted most of the Roman imperial phase until the arrival of the Vandals in the year 424, and its subsequent occupation by the Byzantines and Arabs.

The city was conquered on August 8 of 1235 by troops of the archbishop of Tarragona Guillem de Montgrí, the Infante Pedro of Portugaland the noble Nuno Sanç while working for James I the Conqueror (King of Aragon).

The old part of the city is known as Dalt Vila ('high city'). The medieval area of Dalt Vila was fortified by Felipe II to protect the city from attack by Ottomans and pirates since the triple defensive enclosure, of Arab origin, was not enough. The works were commissioned by Italian engineer Giovanni Battista Calvi.

This fortified enclosure, finished in late sixteenth century, is one of the best preserved bastioned enclosure, along with that of Cartagena de Indias and is part of the World Heritage
