Vișeu de Sus is the terminus of a forestry railway
system that extends deep into the Vaser river valley approaching the Ukrainian
border. Timber is cut on the hillsides at the head of the valley and brought
down by rail for cutting in the saw mill at Vișeu. The waste wood is burned in
the locomotive boilers.
