Prussian Province of Pomerania.

The town was placed under Polish administration by the Allies at the Potsdam Conference in 1945 after World War II. German residents who had not fled before the Red Army were expelled and replaced with Poles.

The town is close to Zalew Kamieński (Kamień Bay). There are some notable landmarks, the most famous being the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist. The cathedral is one of Poland's official national Historic Monuments, as designated September 1, 2005 and tracked by the National Heritage Board of Poland
