The economy in Huamachuco was dependent on both agriculture with herding particularly in the higher elevations and planting at lower elevations. Agriculture was based primarily on potatoes, oca, isanu, ulluca, maca, arachacha and other plants such as chenopods, amaranths, legumes, cucurbits, and beans. The people of Huamachuco were not only farmers, but also hunted animals for food.
