Żejtun takes its name from the Sicilian Arabic for “olive” – zaytun (cognate of Spanish "aceituna" and Portuguese "azeitona") – one of the main productive industries in Malta. It is also known as Ħal-Bisbut, or Casal Bisbut.
The current arch priest is Eric Overend, while the mayor is Joe Attard. Żejtun's population was 11,368 in March 2011
