Climate in Kota Kinabalu

Kota Kinabalu features a tropical rainforest climate, under the Köppen climate classification. However, the city has noticeably wetter and drier seasons. Two prevailing monsoons characterize the climate of this part of Sabah, the Northeast Monsoon and the Southwest Monsoon. The Northeast Monsoon occurs between November and March with cooler temperatures and less rainfall, while the Southwest Monsoon occurs between May and September, which brings warmer temperatures and more rainfall. There are also two successive inter-monsoons from April to May and from September to October. Temperature variation throughout the year is small. However, April and May are generally the hottest months, while December and January are often the coolest. During this period (December and January), some surge of cold winds blowing from Siberia occasionally can drop the early morning temperature to 20 °C. Rainfall varies markedly through the year.
