near the Old Town, which used to
be one of the most run down districts of Vilnius during the Soviet Union, is home to a movement of
bohemian artists, who operate numerous art galleries and workshops. Užupisdeclared itself an independent
republic on April Fool’s Day 1997. In the main square, the statue
of an angel blowing a trumpet stands as a symbol of artistic freedom. The
district is also the home of Vilnius’ Mayor Arturas
