Samastipur is an administrative centre for the East Central Railway headed by Divisional Railway Manager Shri Satya Prakash Trivedi. There are several industries and small-scale industries which include a sugar factory, paper mill, jute mill (Rameshwar jute mill, Muktapur) and railway factory (Wagon wheel factory). There are two sugar factories in Samastipur, one in town near Magardahi ghat and the second one in Hasanpur. Major population earn livelihood through agriculture and its associated business.

Samastipur is rich in agriculture because of its fertile plain land. Tobacco, chilli, turmeric, Garlic, beetle leaf (Paan), maize, potato, mustard, cabbage, cauliflower, rice and wheat are the main crops. Leechi and mango fruits are grown in abundance. vegetables trade is the major business of farmers. Samastipur is the birthplace of famous Hindi maithili poet markandey pravasi, born at garuara yillage and winner of sahitya academy award.The great hindi poet also called kavivar R.C.Prasd singh was born at the village Arout near Motipur/Fatehpur panchayat.His poem tells that desire of the flower is not to become neckles of a beautiful lady, nor to be thrown on the feet of god/godes rather it should be thrown on the way of veer sainik so that it can be crushed by the feet of veer sainik who save our land and country.samastipur is the birth place of renowned professor of English,Prof. Abdul Ghani,who served as head of department(English) at Samastipur College Samastipur
