Religion in Haridwar is synonymous with Hinduism. Located at the foothills of the Shivalik Ranges, Haridwar is one of the most eminent pilgrimage sites of India where myriads of devout Hindus flock to every year.

Haridwar abounds in temples and ashrams. The city is located on the banks of the Ganges River and it is said that a dip in the holy waters of the river absolve all pious Hindus from their sins and transgressions and help them achieve nirvana. The spiritually inclined tourists also enjoy sitting by the riverside in the pleasant evenings and watch the evening prayers. The aarti, where the priests chant the holy hymns, and the floating lamps (diyas) illuminate the shimmering river waters, making it a wonderful spectacle.

Haridwar is a city abounding in religious diaspora. In fact, much of the city's revenue is generated from religious tourism and all other cultural extravaganzas that are centered on the religious activities. The notable religious sites include the revered sanctums of the shrine of Maya Devi, the venerable Har Ki Pauri Ghat that is considered to be one of the country's leading pilgrimage sites and even the traditional Gurukul Kangri University that still follow the Gurukul system of academic instructions.
