Gangavathi is an important commercial centre. Since it is situated close to Tungabhadra dam. Hampi, a well known UNESCO World Heritage Site is 14 km from the town. Other places of historical importance include Anegundi, Kanakagiri, and Hemagudda. Gangavathi was one many talukas in Raichur District. When Koppal district was carved out of Raichur District, Gangavathi became part of Koppal district. Gangavathi is famous for rice cultivation, and is considered the rice bowl of Karnataka. It is famous for its rice milling industry. Many films, such as China Gate, Amaanat, and Nayak, have been shot in Gangavathi.

Gangavathi has also received equal amount of popularity in producing sugar. Gangavathi Sugar Limited was once second biggest sugar plant in Asia. GSL (Gangavathi Sugar Limited) is located at Pragathinagar village which is 10 km away from Gangavathi city on the state high way to Raichur.
