In 1542, most of the inhabitants became Lutherans. Today 28.5% of the inhabitants are Roman Catholics (Hildesheim Diocese) and 38.3% are Protestants (Lutheran State Church of Hanover). 33.0% of the inhabitants are adherents of other religions or do not have a religion at all. The Serbian Orthodox bishop (Central European Diocese) has his seat in Himmelsth�r (a locality of Hildesheim)
