Tranekaer  Castle is known from sources from the 1200-century . It was a heavily fortified castle , situated on a steep hill with a moat and drawbridge .

By Valdemar second Victorious died 1241 surpassed Tranekaer  Castle to the royal family Abel-line, who held it with a few interruptions until Valdemar IVin 1358 took the castle after 14 days of siege and inserted a royal captain and made it the headquarters for Tranekaer  Len .
