This municipality was founded by Pedro MarĂ­a Marmolejo in the year of 1567 , whom King Philip II assigned the JURISDICTION in the years 1527 - 1598 in areas where there was an Indian village of the tribe of the Motuas who were known as Indians journals, as they were fishing experts bocachico (journal) in the swamps that formed on the banks of river Cauca . It was given the name "Santa Maria Magdalena de Riofrio" since the day of its foundation coincided with the celebration of the patron saint festivities which performs July 22 of each year.
