Apparently the name of the municipality "Pisba" originated in an earlier Indian settlement to the arrival of the Spanish . The town was founded in 1628 by the Jesuits . He was recognized as a municipality in 1913.

The territory of Pisba, like the rest of the province of La Libertad , was inhabited by the Muisca and its origin is very similar to other villages in the area as Morcote, Chita , Tamara , Paya , Guaseco and Pauto where parents arrived the Society of Jesus in the early 1600s accompanied the Spanish conquistadors.
