The town of Nuevo Colón, founded in 1538 by the Spanish Gonzalo Suarez Rendon , elevated to municipality May 6, 1783, with the name of Cherivi; in 1915 its name was changed to New colon, by ordinance No. 5 March 1916.

Cheriví was a former Indian village to the Spanish conquest whose origins are uncertain. The Spanish expedition of Don Gonzalo Jimenez de Quesada in search of the emerald mines of Somondoco in 1538, leading to the lands of the lord of Turmequé.
