The territory now occupied Necoclí, before the conquest of America and the first Spanish settlement on the mainland was inhabited by the Caribs, a warlike people with great skill in the use of bows and arrows who practiced cannibalism. Of these, made of various ethnicities and provinces among which were those of Urabá, Urabaibe and Guaen who populated the territory between Punta Caribana and the Atrato River.

The Urabaibes were absorbed by ozigana which stretched from Punta Caribana Cayman to New; came to have a population of more than five thousand inhabitants and
