Who first explored the mountainous part of the department were Juan de Ampudia and Pedro de Añazco commissioned by Sebastian Belalcazar in 1535, who then toured the territory in 1536 and reached Popayan where he remained some time before his departure for Spain . Returning Belalcázar in 1541 and with the title of governor of the lands he conquered, he divided his dominions in 14 holdings ; then this territory as part stay the hearing of Quito . After independence, the region was part of the province of Popayan on numerous occasions between 1821 and 1863 then became part of the Department of Cauca and the provinces of Barbecues and Pasto on, then in 1863 the Sovereign State of Cauca until 1886 when departments were restored. Finally in 1904 the department of Nariño, with its capital in San Juan de Pasto was created.
