Miguel Cuervo Araoz, since serving as a meeting point between different indigenous communities, and rubber operation center, hides and missionary center. Its main activity was trade rubber for food, clothing and fuel. After being for a time township, became the capital of the municipality and then Special Commissioner Vaupes.

In 1963 Mitu was the capital of the Commissariat Vaupés, as endorsed by the Article 309 of the Constitution of 1991 to be designated as capital of the Department of Vaupés.

The town of Mitu was created by the National Decree 1666 of August 6, 1974, establishing itself as the capital of Vaupés municipal seat; its first mayor Jorge Enrique Jimenez was appointed by Decree 090 of 14 April 1975 So, the Municipal Council was constituted for the first time on November 5, 1976.
