Before the arrival of the Spaniards, there was an indigenous settlement in the area where it is now MaripĂ­ this Aboriginal group belonged to Muzos ethnic family caribbean , which maintained a constant conflict with the Muisca , inhabitants of the altiplano Cundiboyacence . The territory was occupied from 1559 when Luis Boatmen finally managed to subdue the natives after 20 years of unsuccessful attempts. The first encomenderos of this city was the conquistador Juan Marmolejo.
