Before the Spanish colonization , the place was called Mahabana, honoring a chief Indian name Mahada. According to the most widespread version of the historians, the town was founded by the Spanish Captain Diego Rebolledo in 1680

Initially, the population was known by the name of San Luis Beltrán , by the name of the saint, who passed through that region as missionary Dominican .
