Initially these lands and neighboring municipalities were inhabited, as much of the vast Antioquia, by ethnic Indians, mostly Nutabes .

After installation on the territory of the first colony in 1760 , the fledgling community of this county was called Leaves Wide . This name came about because just as the colonists had called a stream rich in gold around which were stationed in the city farms Antonio Quintana , of Spanish origin.
