Indian territory of Chios and the extensive domains of Cacique Guatavita, becoming the first town and district parish Guavio Region.

The population was consolidated with the building of the new church, hired by the Magistrate Enriquez, under the direction of Mason Domingo Pérez. It was remodeled twice: in 1728, being Cura Fernando de Guzman, and in 1755 by Father Diego Martin Teran interim. By tradition the Indians exploited the salt producing sources of the highest quality and purity of the region, located 12 km from the town.

Gachetá was one of the first people to fly the flag of the revolution in 1810. It also constituted the only path to revolutionary Guavio plains of Casanare and guerrilla scenario sessions conducted from 1810 to 1819. One of the sons of Manuel Salvador Diaz Gachetá was Salavarrieta Policarpa mate on the scaffold during the Spanish reconquest of 1817. Subsequently, the "political violence" unleashed between liberals and conservatives took place in the region and resulted in multiple social and economic consequences.Central to the area was the transfer and ownership concentration, because given the repressive action of conservative groups toward liberal families, they were forced to sell at very low prices their farms and move to other cities in search of anonymity.

Because of the severity of these repressions, forced participation of national authorities, who applied in Gachetá the "Mayor's Office" trying to impose the institutional order. This, like most municipalities in Colombia, has a story that chronicles the violence, colonization and progress of a country with many historical nuances.
