se emblem was Rancho Grande, huge red brick building with Canadian pine frames, elevators of 4 feet square, basements, spiral stairs, safety glasses and insulated refrigerator cork 20 centimeters thick, which barely worked, remained inactive between 1923 and 1938, it hosted the South American Gulf Oil Company (SAGOC), extracted oil exporting company Catatumbo between 1938 and 1974. From that year to date is based on the Naval Base ARC Coveñas of the Colombian Navy.

The Colombian Petroleum Company - ECOPETROL - also settled in Coveñas since 1974, initially in Rancho Grande, facilities that gave the Navy and continued work on the grounds that oil reserved west of Rancho Grande.

The Municipality of Coveñas was created in 2002
