Covarachía Township was founded by the Spaniards. The Viceroy Juan Zamano decreed the creation of the parish in 1819 at the request of neighbors, for those times resorted to for Religious Parishes Onzaga, Capitanejo Soatá and services.

In February 1824 the parish with land Pizarral Tapias and Nogontova, segregated Caguanoque of Onzaga Capitanejo and officially approved. Covarachía reserved its name from 1819-1858, to 1,869 this year the town was called Ricaurte.
