Porvenir emerged from a police station installed in 1883 during the gold rush and was founded in 1894 , under the government of Jorge Montt �lvarez , for supporting new ranches. Initially inhabited by immigrant Europeans encouraged by the discovery of deposits of gold , and then Chilean Chilo� . The city, by the Bay Future-called Karkamke (shallow waters) by selk'nam - located opposite the city of Punta Arenas , from which it is separated by the Strait of Magellan

Each year takes place on the island of Tierra del Fuego the rally called the Brotherhood Grand Prix Argentine-Chilean , being Porvenir and Rio Grande , in Argentina the two locations that are about to start or finish, alternatively each year
