Guarulhos is the second largest city in the Brazilian state of Sao Paulo and a suburb of Sao Paulo city itself. In the last few years it has outgrown Campinas. The population in 2006 is 1,283,253, the density is 4,035.26 inh./Sq.Km and the area is 318 Sq.Km. It is 12th largest city in Brazil and also the most populous non-capital city in the country.

It is the 10th largest suburb in the world.

The name comes from the Tupi language, and means Eaters, big-bellied people; a reference to the original indigenous inhabitants of the area.

Sao Paulo-Guarulhos International Airport (GRU), one of the main Brazilian airports, is located there.

Mamonas Assassinas, a 1990s satirical pop/rock group, came from Guarulhos.

The city is the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Guarulhos
