History of El Golea

JuteVilla
The history of El Golea started in the 10th century, when the Berber tribes settled here. On the hills surrounding the oasis you can still find well preserved ruins of their fortifications.

What to see and what to visit

About 2 km south from the oasis there is a catholic church ? the first one that was built in Sahara. It was consecrated in 1938. Charles de Foucauld ? a catholic priest who wanted to bring Christianity to this part of Africa is buried there. The old part of the town is full of small houses made of clay. The new part is ugly and uninteresting.

El Golea was the name given to the city before the independence of Algeria .

The city is the location of the tomb of the father missionary Charles de Foucauld .

Jean Dubuffet stayed there three times because he was interested in the art of people
